The standards required to accuse someone of a federal crime or regulatory violation are shockingly low. For the accused, this creates a sense of stress and doom punctuated by fear, panic, and uncertainty. We firmly stand between the accused and the federal government. In doing so, we instill courage, calm, and certitude within the accused. We despise wrongful convictions. And we believe in the power of jurors to prevent them. When the government cannot eliminate every single reasonable doubt in its accusation, we will unleash that juror power by forcing the government into the crucible of trial.
Unfortunately, there are bad companies, bad people, and bad public employees in our society. Whether with evil intent, just plain carelessness, or something in between, these wrongdoers often harm others. Those harmed usually suffer from pain, anger, grief, and sorrow. Money never can completely fill the void created by those feelings. But we try to force the wrongdoers to pay money for every bit of harm they cause others. And for the truly evil or callously indifferent? We also seek to punish those kinds of wrongdoers to the maximum extent allowed by civil law.
